Aunty Audrey, Simone Owen and Dr Heidi Janssen will co-present their learnings, ways of doing - both Community engagement and research practices - related to the Yarning up After Stroke Project - a Stroke Foundation and Medical Research Future Fund sponsored research project which started back in 2020. This project aims to develop and evaluate a culturally safe and responsive model of stroke recovery care so to strengthen the health, spirit and well-being of First Nations Peoples living with stroke.
They will share their ways of working with the First Peoples of Gamilaraay/Gomeroi Lands who have a lived experience of stroke outlining: learnings on what is wanted and needed for culturally safe stroke care, reflect on mistakes made and shared wins, and present preliminary findings from their Community-Led work. This presentation will aim to empower clinicians and researchers to explore ways of developing their own authentic and culturally safe relationships with First Peoples living in their health and research Communities.
